Nneka Ogwumike, Glory Johnson Headline 2012 All-Rookie Team

NEW YORK, Oct. 7, 2012 – 2012 WNBA Rookie of the Year Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks and the Tulsa Shock’s Glory Johnson headline the 2012 WNBA All-Rookie Team, the league announced today. The Atlanta Dream’s Tiffany Hayes, Phoenix Mercury’s Samantha Prahalis and Shock’s Riquna Williams round out the group of elite first-year players.

The voting panel consisted of the WNBA’s 12 head coaches, each of whom voted for five players regardless of position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their own team. Ogwumike and Johnson each received 11 votes, Hayes and Prahalis each garnered nine, and Williams tallied eight.

Ogwumike, the first overall selection in the 2012 WNBA Draft and a four-time Rookie of the Month (May, July, August, September), led all rookies in scoring (14.0 ppg), rebounds (7.5 rpg) and double-doubles (nine). The Stanford University alumna tied for the lead among rookies in blocks (0.9 bpg) and ranked fourth in steals (1.39 spg). Ogwumike’s best game came on Sept. 13, in an 86-77 victory against the Chicago Sky, where she recorded a double-double with a career-best 30 points, and added 11 rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes.

Johnson, the fourth overall selection in the 2012 WNBA Draft and former SEC Tournament MVP (2012), played in all 34 games and started 28 for the Shock. She led rookies in steals (2.15 spg), ranked second in rebounds (6.8 rpg) and third in scoring (11.5 ppg). The University of Tennessee alumna scored a career-high 30 points on July 12 in a 74-89 loss at Minnesota. In the same game, she also contributed 14 rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

A second-round draft selection and two-time NCAA champion (2009, 2010), Hayes played in 34 games, starting 17, for the Dream. The University of Connecticut alumna ranked second among rookies in assists (2.1 apg) and fifth in scoring (8.6 ppg). On July 7, she recorded a career-high 23 points in a 100-93 win on the road against Phoenix.

The sixth overall selection in the 2012 WNBA Draft and league’s Rookie of the Month for June, Prahalis played and started in 28 games for the Mercury. The Ohio State alumna led first-year players in assists (4.5 apg) and ranked second in scoring (11.6 ppg) and steals (1.57 spg). Prahalis set a career-high 22 points on June 23 in an 84-93 loss to Los Angeles, also contributing five assists and four steals on the night.

Williams, second-round draft selection and two-time All-ACC First-Team selection, played in 33 games, starting three, for the Shock. The University of Miami alumna ranked third among rookies in both assists (2.1 apg) and steals (1.55 spg), and ranked fourth in scoring (10.5 ppg). Williams recorded a career-high 27 points on June 26 in a 91-75 win over Los Angeles in just 26 minutes.
