Rapid Reactions From the 2015 Draft Lottery
SECAUCUS, NJ, August 21, 2014 -- Tonight, ping pong balls decided the fate of the three teams involved in the 2015 WNBA draft lottery (Seattle, Tulsa, and Connecticut). While Connecticut and Tulsa had been here just last year, it was Seattle that walked away with the with the first pick. This will be their first number one draft pick since 2001 and 2002 when they drafted Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird, two players that helped build the Seattle Storm franchise.
Needless to say, Storm head coach Brian Agler was optimistic and already running through possible selections:
"I don't know if there's a clear-cut decision as to who will go number one or number two, but I do think that when it all plays out there's going to be multiple players that will end up making a roster and helping a team as we go into the 2015 season."
The Shock came away with the second pick which is the highest pick for the franchise since it moved to Tulsa from Detroit. Tulsa representative Sam Combs was thrilled when he heard number two:
"I thought, this may be the year! Finally, I think this may be it. It's funny how the balls bounce. We fully expected to be in the playoffs this year and it was disappointing of course but we had some stretches there where we just lost a number of close games. But you try to put it in perspective, [we had] a new coach and still a bunch of young players. We believe that as we go along we keep adding these quality picks."
And lastly, the Connecticut Sun who had last year's number one pick, walked away with both three and four as New York traded their first round draft pick to Connecticut as part of the Tina Charles trade during the 2014 Draft. Connecticut CEO Mitchell Etess was less than thrilled (although still hopeful):
"When I saw those odds on the board, I thought the idea of us leaping up to number one was very, very slim, but you know I think this year's draft it's not like there's a prize, per say, that you have to have. I think that it's very balanced and there's a lot of players out there and having two picks gives us the ability to draft and gives us the ability to make moves... it gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility."
And so with that, the draft order for the 2015 draft lottery is set.
