San Antonio Silver Stars Center Ruth Riley Receives WNBA Community Assist Award for August

NEW YORK, September 18, 2008 – The WNBA today honored San Antonio Silver Stars center, two-time WNBA Champion and Nothing But Nets spokesperson Ruth Riley with its Community Assist Award. Riley is being honored for playing an active role in the team’s community outreach initiatives and her involvement with organizations year-round that support youth health and wellness.

Riley participated in numerous community events throughout the month of August to support Nothing But Nets, a grassroots campaign that provides African families with bed nets that play an important role in preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. During the Silver Stars 5K Run/Walk benefiting the initiative, Riley welcomed more than 600 race participants, ran with children in the “One-Mile Fun Run” and distributed awards during the closing ceremony. Later in the month, she hosted a dinner for a Bed Nets and Baby Cribs Auction winner and spoke at a local church about Nothing But Nets, explaining the campaign's mission and how the public can help.

“I am honored to receive the Community Assist Award,” said Riley. “Throughout my life, people have invested their time and effort helping me get where I am today. I feel that it is now my privilege and responsibility give back in the same manner.”

Continuing her commitment to health and wellness, Riley and her teammates hosted hundreds of local children for an afternoon of outdoor activities during the WNBA FIT Silver Stars Field Day. Riley led her squad through a series of obstacle courses and spoke to them about the importance of daily exercise and a healthy diet.

Riley wrapped up her month of community initiatives by joining her teammates for the Third Annual Silver Stars Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament benefit a number of breast health awareness charities, including the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The WNBA Community Assist Award is presented monthly to the player who best reflects the league’s passion for making a difference in the community. In recognition of the Riley’s charitable efforts, the WNBA is donating at total of $5,000 to Nothing But Nets and to The TRIAD Trust, an HIV/AIDS awareness organization.
