Behind the Numbers: 2014 WNBA All-Star

The 2014 WNBA All-Star has as much talent and starpower as ever before with not only the leagues biggest stars putting up banner numbers, but also some of its newest members showing their worth early on even landing a place in WNBA All-Star history.

The marquee All-Star numbers this year even stretch beyond the court. While this year's All Stars have racked up many points, blocks and steals over the course of the season, they have also racked up numbers in terms of fans, followers and dollars donated to charity.

What follows are the numbers of note for this year's WNBA All-Stars.

Note: All stats are as of 7/17/14

3

This All-Star game marks a pivotal moment for the WNBA as all three of last years 3 to See (Brittney Griner, Elena Delle Donne, and Skylar Diggins) were voted All-Star starters after remarkable sophomore campaigns. All three improved on their stats from last season.

Although Delle Donne is currently out to receive treatment for a Lyme Disease flare up (which she contracted while in college), she had a spectacular start to the season. She started off averaging 21.2 PPG with 4.9 RPG. She is expected to return at some point this season.

Skylar Diggins has arguably been the most improved player in the entire league. At this point in the season, she has more than doubled her scoring average (21 PPG) from a year ago.

Brittney Griner has also improved immensely on her rookie season. She is currently averaging 15.2 PPG and is leading the league in block. (Her 77 blocks are more than some entire teams).

10

This year there are 10 fomrer No. 1 overall draft picks selected to be in the WNBA All-Star game (including the last seven). They are:

Chiney Ogwumike (2014)

Angel McCoughtry (2009)
Candace Parker (2008)

25.3

In 2006, Diana Taurasi set the WNBA scoring average record with 25.3 PPG. Now, Maya Moore is getting dangerously close to that record at 24.1 PPG at the break. Moore has nine 30 point games on the season.

25,601

This year marks the third consecutive WNBA All-Star Game in which a rookie was voted to the starting lineup (Moore, 2011; Delle Donne and Griner, 2013) with Atlanta Dream rookie Shoni Schimmel receiving the third most votes overall (25,601), behind only Moore and Delle Donne.

Schimmel has enjoyed a solid rookie campaign, averaging 7.2 PPG and an outstanding 3.5 APG, and is immensely popular off the court.

$48,000

This season Tina Charles is donating half of her salary to Hopey's Heart Foundation on top of the $48,000 she has already raised for the charity named after her late aunt Maureen "Hopey" Vaz.

Skylar Diggins, who has put up fantastic numbers on the court (21 PPG, 5.2 APG), also has just over 495K twitter followers. Including, of course, one very special fan.
