VETERAN CENTER MELVIN RETURNS TO MYSTICS
Washington, D.C. – Washington Mystics General Manager Angela Taylor announced today that the Mystics have signed center Chasity Melvin. Per team policy, terms of the deal will not be released.
“We are thrilled to bring Chasity back to DC to help solidify our post presence and to help us challenge for an Eastern Conference Championship,” Taylor stated. “During her WNBA career, Chasity has been a consistent force on the low block. She has a great feel for the game and makes others around her better. Several other teams were interested in her services, so it is great to have her back in Mystics blue. Chasity is a competitor who will bring a nice veteran presence to our locker room. She is determined to win a WNBA Championship here in DC, and we are looking forward to her helping lead the way.”
Melvin spent 2008 and the majority of the 2007 season with the Chicago Sky. Prior to joining the Sky, Melvin spent three seasons with the Mystics where she helped lead the team to two playoff berths (2004, 2006). She was traded in 2007 in exchange for Monique Currie. She was acquired by Washington with the second pick in the 2004 Dispersal Draft of the Cleveland Rockers roster.
A 10-year WNBA veteran, Melvin has averaged 10.6 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and has a 46.6 field goal percentage. She has made five playoffs appearances where she averaged 10.5 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game. She was selected in the first round (11th overall) by the Rockers in the 1999 draft. Melvin has also played professionally with the Philadelphia Rage of the ABL where she averaged 12 points and 5.6 rebounds. In 2001, Melvin was named to the All Star team as a reserve but was unable to participate due to an eye injury.
“I am excited to come back to Washington because I really missed the fans and I want to be part of the new changes within the Mystics organization,” said Melvin. “I am also looking forward to seeing familiar faces and getting to know my new teammates.”
The Washington Mystics will tip off the 2009 season on Saturday, June 6th, on the road against the Connecticut Sun. Washington will host the club’s home opener on Sunday, June 7th, against the Atlanta Dream.
