Mercury Expect Coach Westhead to Resign

Mercury general manager Ann Meyers Drysdale said Tuesday morning she expects coach Paul Westhead to resign in order to become an assistant coach with the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics.

“We have a plan for him leaving," Meyers Drysdale said. “We feel pretty (sure) that he’s going to be gone. I don’t think it’s an easy decision for him but he knows what’s best for himself and his family.”

Westhead led the Mercury to their first WNBA title in just his second season as coach. Myers Drysdale said that if Westhead leaves she’s not sure whether she’ll promote an assistant coach from within or look outside the organization for a head coach.
