Taurasi Nominated for an ESPY

Last night Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi was announced as a 2012 ESPY nominee in the category of “Best WNBA Player,” for her performance during the 2011 season.

Fans can select the winners by voting online or by mobile device at ESPN.com/ESPYS. Other players nominated in this category include Minnesota Lynx’s Seimone Augustus, Indiana Fever’s Tamika Catchings, Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles and Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry.

The 20th ESPYS will air live on Wednesday, July 11 at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles, with host Rob Riggle.

During the 2011 season Taurasi led the league in scoring for the fourth straight season and fifth time in the last six years. She was also a member of the All-WNBA First Team, a starter in her fifth career All-Star game and named the 2011 Peak Performer for leading the league in scoring with 21.6 points per game.

Taurasi has previously won five ESPY awards. She was twice named the “Best WNBA Player” (2010, 2011) as well as twice named the “Best Female College Athlete” (2003, 2004) while at the University of Connecticut in addition to earning the “Best Female Athlete” award in 2004 after leading the Huskies to three straight NCAA National Championships.
