Dupree Leads Mercury in Double OT Win
It wasn't pretty, but the Mercury demonstrated an incredible amount of heart and resilience in a 91-79 win in double overtime Saturday night in San Antonio - all the more impressive considering the team played in Tulsa less than 24 hours prior.
The Mercury is now 5-2 on the year and second place in the Western Conference.
After the game went back and forth for the majority of the first half, the Mercury went on a 12-0 run to start the third quarter and would eventually lead by 14.
San Antonio subsequently stormed back and went up by four points with 15 seconds left in regulation.
DeWanna Bonner then hit a three-pointer to pull the Mercury to within one. Two Stars free throws increased the lead to three, but Diana Taurasi hit another three-pointer to send the game into the first overtime.
The Mercury and Stars would each score six points in the first overtime, before Phoenix caught fire in the second overtime scoring 14 points to the Stars' two which sealed the win.
Candice Dupree had an outstanding game and was a major factor in the team's offense all night. Dupree finished with 26 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
Brittney Griner was a stellar force on the boards grabbing 18 rebounds to go along with her 16 points for a double-double. Diana Taurasi had a solid all-around game with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Phoenix continues their road trip in Washington on Tuesday, June 10 to face the Mystics.
Penny Taylor's 35 minutes of play! Her 12 points off the bench to go along with her nine rebounds and five assists were huge for the Mercury.
