Phoenix Mercury Re-Signs Kelly Mazzante
PHOENIX – The 2007 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury has re-signed guard Kelly Mazzante to a four-year contract, the club announced today.
“Kelly is well respected as a player and a person,” said Mercury General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale. “Virtually every team in this league wanted her and I feel grateful and proud that she wants to remain a member of the Mercury for a long time. She will continue to be instrumental to this organization.”
“I am excited to be re-signing with Phoenix,” said Mazzante. “The Mercury fans were so supportive and passionate last year and Phoenix now feels like home. I can’t wait to get back and start defending our title alongside my teammates and coaches in the upcoming season.”
The 6-0 guard will return for her second season with Phoenix in 2008. In 2007 Mazzante appeared in all 34 games (three starts) and is Phoenix’s highest-scoring reserve averaging 5.4 points. Mazzante was selected by the Mercury with the fifth pick in the 2007 dispersal draft (Charlotte).
Mazzante leads the league in steals per turnover (1.3). The Penn State graduate is the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten Conference history (men or women) with 2,919 points. Mazzante is currently playing for Spartak Moscow in Russia.
On May 17, 2008 the 2007 WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will begin its 12th season under the direction of General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale and new Head Coach Corey Gaines.
