Lisa Fernandez Named Woman of Inspiration
PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury will honor USA Softball legend Lisa Fernandez as the team’s 2013 Woman of Inspiration during its August 31 game against the Connecticut Sun. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

She joins an elite group of inspiring women who have gone above and beyond in their careers and in the community, and we are excited to welcome her to our Mercury family.”

The annual event, sponsored by BBVA Compass, will honor Fernandez for her commitment and dedication to work, family and the community. Fernandez and other local women will be recognized throughout the evening’s game. Additionally, Fernandez will participate in a Q&A with fans at halftime.
Fernandez is currently in her 15th season as an assistant coach for the UCLA softball team. During her tenure, the program has won four NCAA championships and three Pac-10 titles.
A U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer and three-time Olympic gold medalist, Fernandez played on the U.S. softball team during the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. She recorded a .33 ERA as a pitcher for Team USA and got the final three outs to defeat China in the gold medal game of 1996. Over the course of her career, Fernandez set an Olympic record of 59 strikeouts as a pitcher. She also helped the USA Softball Women’s National Team earn gold medals at the Pan American Games and the Canada Cup as a pitcher and third baseman. In 1999, Fernandez was named the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball Female Athlete of the Year.
Fernandez was equally successful in her career as a collegiate athlete at UCLA. There, she led the Bruins to two national championships and was recognized as a four-time first-team All-American and a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Year. Additionally, she became the first softball player to win the Honda-Broderick Cup in 1993, presented to the most outstanding collegiate female athlete in all sports.

Fernandez joins an elite group of inspiring women who have been honored by the Mercury, including Robin Roberts (2007), Ali Vincent, the first female Biggest Loser (2008), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (2009), Billie Jean King (2010), Picabo Street (2011) and Hope Solo (2012).
Tickets are available for the Mercury-Sun matchup on Saturday, August 31 at US Airways Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Additionally, limited tickets are still available for the Mercury-Lynx matchup on Sunday, July 21.
