Mercury Re-Sign Key Reserves Lacy, Derevjanik

PHOENIX, Feb. 6, 2007 – The Phoenix Mercury kept the club’s top two reserves from the squad that won a franchise-record seven consecutive games to close the 2006 season, re-signing forward Jennifer Lacy and guard Jen Derevjanik, the team announced today. Per club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“I’m ecstatic about keeping Jennifer Lacy and Jen Derevjanik in Phoenix,” said Mercury General Manager Ann Meyers Drysdale. “They were each an integral part of the success of our team down the stretch in 2006.”

The 6-3, 175-pound Lacy spent her first full season in the WNBA with the Mercury in 2006, posting career-high averages of 4.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 15.3 minutes in 33 games played. Lacy set a Mercury record, making seven field goals without a miss in a career-high 16-point effort against the Charlotte Sting on August 3, 2006. The Pepperdine University product, who last season became the first West Coast Conference (WCC) player in the WNBA, is currently playing in Greece for Kastoria.

Derevjanik emerged as the Mercury’s backup point guard last season after signing with Phoenix on June 1, three games into the 2006 season. The 5-10, 140-pound George Mason product averaged 3.1 points and 2.2 assists in 14.8 minutes, playing in all 31 games after joining the team. Derevjanik, who began her playing career with the Connecticut Sun, is currently playing in Russia for Dynamo-Energia-Novosybirsk.

“Jen Derevjanik really proved herself when [starting point guard] Kelly Miller was out early in the season,” Meyers Drysdale added. “We’re looking forward to the return of the excitement and energy she brings to our backcourt.”

Winners of a franchise-high seven straight to finish 2006, the Phoenix Mercury look to pick up where they left off led by All-Stars Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter in the record-shattering offense of head coach Paul Westhead. Under the direction of new general manager Ann Meyers Drysdale and owners of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft, the Mercury open their 11th WNBA season on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. at US Airways Center against the San Antonio Silver Stars.
