“Anytime someone of that stature is speaking, you listen,” Diana Taurasi said about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s appearance at US Airways Center recently.

Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, visited Phoenix Mercury practice to talk about the importance of teamwork, dedication and living a healthy lifestyle. Abdul-Jabbar is also a Hall of Famer, a six-time NBA champion and a six-time MVP.

“The most important part of his talk for me was about teamwork,” said Alexis Hornbuckle. “That’s really what we are focusing on as a team this year. It’s always good to have it reinforced from someone who’s accomplished that much. He’s a legend.”

Sammy Prahalis, who grew up a Los Angeles Lakers fan, was also inspired.

“It’s crazy that we were able to hear from the NBA’s all-time leading scorer,” Prahalis said with a smile. “What he said made a lot of sense to me, especially the eating healthy part and taking care of yourself. I made a point to commit to that in the off-season.”

You can’t talk about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and not mention the skyhook – the two are practically synonymous with one another. After all, it’s a shot he perfected early on in his career that led to nearly 40,000 points scored in the NBA. After his talk with the team, Abdul-Jabbar spent over 20 minutes with Brittney Griner going over the lethal offensive move.

The short clinic he gave her has already opened up more options offensively for Griner.

"I went to legend school today and it was awesome," Griner said afterwards. “I was star struck right there. It’s something I definitely want to add to my game – the skyhook.”
