Corey Gaines Reaches Mercury Milestone

While the win by the Sparks prevented the Mercury from clinching a playoff spot in Tuesday night’s win at Tulsa, the victory did help Head Coach Corey Gaines reach an impressive milestone.
With the win – the 71st of his career - Gaines became the franchise’s all-time leader in victories, a mark previously held by the team’s inaugural coach, Cheryl Miller.
“I didn’t find out about it until after the game had ended,” Gaines told PhoenixMercury.com. “When you’re fighting for a championship, those aren’t the types of things you really focus on. The focus now is on winning a championship, but it is an accomplishment and it’s an accomplishment I’m sure I’ll appreciate later on down the line.”
The win came at a good time for the Mercury, who are currently battling for playoff position in the WNBA’s Western Conference standings. Following the road win, the Mercury currently sit in second place, one game up in the loss column on the Seattle Storm. While the conference’s best record already locked up by the Lynx, a second seed would guarantee the Mercury home court advantage through at least the first round of the playoffs.
But according to Gaines, his concern is not where the Mercury end up in the standings that matter, but just making sure his team is playing the type of basketball he knows they are capable of.
“Right now it’s more about gaining some good momentum,” Gaines said. “We just want to fine tune some things and play good basketball.”
