The Phoenix Mercury selected Colorado guard/forward Brittany Spears (19th overall) and Nevada guard Tahnee Robinson (31st overall) in the 2011 WNBA Draft today. Phoenix traded its rights to Robinson to Connecticut for a 2012 third round selection.
A 6-1 native of Pasadena, Calif., Spears led Colorado with 19.2 points per game, third best in the Big 12, and 8.1 rebounds. A 2011 All-Big 12 first team selection, she reached double figures in scoring in 32 of 34 games this season and scored 20 or more points 18 times. Spears led the Big 12 in defensive rebounds (6.0) while also ranking fourth in made three pointers (2.4 per game), fifth in free-throw percentage (.830), 10th in steals (1.8) and 11th in blocked shots (1.2).
Spears led the Buffalos to the quarterfinals of the 2011 WNIT averaging 27.5 points and nine rebounds in four postseason WNIT games. A starter for all 127 career games at Colorado, Spears tops the school’s all-time scoring list with 2,185 points and is just the second player in school history to score 500 points in three consecutive seasons (2008-11).
The Mercury traded its first round pick in this year’s draft to the Tulsa Shock last season along with Nicole Ohlde in exchange for 6-6 forward/center Kara Braxton, who promptly signed an extension to remain in Phoenix. The Mercury also acquired free agent guard Marie Ferdinand-Harris and free agent forward Nakia Sanford in February.
The Mercury’s training camp opens May 15 with the season officially tipping off on June 4 against the WNBA defending champion Seattle Storm. Phoenix’s home opener is on Friday, June 17 vs. San Antonio.
