Pondexter Named Player of the Week

PHOENIX – Phoenix Mercury guard Cappie Pondexter was named the WNBA’s Player of the Week for the week of June 5-11, 2006, the league announced today.

Pondexter receives the honor after helping to lead her previously winless team to two straight victories at home last week, over the Sacramento Monarchs and Detroit Shock. The rookie phenom averaged 28.5 points on torrid 60.5 percent shooting, vaulting her to the top of the league’s scoring list (23.7). She shot 42.9 percent from three-point range, 72.7 percent from the free throw line, dished 3.5 assists, grabbed 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 33.0 minutes.

Against the defending champion Monarchs on June 6th, Pondexter posted her second straight 30-point night, becoming just the third player (Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes) in league history to record back-to-back games of 30 or more. In that contest, teammate Taurasi matched Pondexter’s 30 as the two became the first teammates in WNBA history to post 30 or more points in the same game.

Pondexter nearly tied Cynthia Cooper’s league record with her third straight 30-point effort, coming up with a game-high 27 points against the Detroit Shock on June 9th.

Pondexter leads all rookies in points and assists (2.7), ranks second in field goal percentage (50.5), fourth in free throw percentage (82.9) and fifth in three-point percentage (36.0) in 31.8 minutes (second among rookies).

Pondexter becomes just the third player in Mercury history to win the award, joining teammate Diana Taurasi and Mercury legend Jennifer Gillom, who won twice.

Phoenix will look for its third straight win and first on the road on Tuesday as they take on the Sparks in Los Angeles. Scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. local time, the game can be heard on the Mercury radio network, ESPN Radio 860 AM.
