Lynx Key Game: Home Opener, Tuesday, May 23 vs. Connecticut Sun

The Minnesota Lynx open their 2006 season against the 2005 WNBA Championship runners-up the Connecticut Sun. Last season, the Sun went 26-8 in the regular season and lost in four games to the Sacramento Monarchs in the WNBA Finals. A big part of Connecticut’s 2005 success was Minnesota’s own Lindsay Whalen. Whalen graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2004 after leading the Gopher women’s basketball team to their first ever Final Four appearance. She was a two-time All-American and the only player in Gopher history to be named team MVP four years in a row. In 2005, Whalen’s second WNBA Season, she averaged 12.1 points per game and 5.1 assists. In the playoffs, she averaged 11.1 ppg.

Last Season, the Sun defeated the Lynx in each of the teams’ two match ups. In the first meeting, Nykesha Salesscored 18 points and Whalen contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists as Connecticut coasted to a 71-57 victory at Mohegan Sun Arena. Katie Smith led Minnesota with 11 points and Svetlana Abrosimova added 10. In their second match up, four Sun starters reached double-figures, led by Margo Dydek’s 17 points, as Conncecticut defeated the Lynx, 72-53, Jul. 17 at Target Center. Smith and Amanda Lassiter led Minnesota with 11 points apiece and Nicole Ohlde added 10.
