Lynx Activate Van Gorp, Place Smith On IL

July 28, 2004 The Lynx activated center Michele Van Gorp from the Injured List and placed guard Katie Smith on the Injured List with a contusion to the lateral compartment in her right knee.

Van Gorp was placed on the Injured List with a stress reaction to the navicular bone in her left foot on June 7. In five 2004 regular season games, Van Gorp posted averages of 3.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg and 9.6 mpg. The 6-6 center is in her sixth year in the WNBA, her fourth with the Lynx.

Smith suffered her knee injury with 11:09 left to go in the Lynx' July 23 contest vs. the Washington Mystics at the MCI Center. A four-time All Star and four-time All-WNBA performer, Smith is averaging 18.8 ppg (third overall in the WNBA), 3.7 rpg, 2.3 apg and 34.8 mpg this season. Smith, a 5-11 guard, recently moved into third place on the WNBA's all-time scoring chart after scoring 27 points in Minnesota's 68-52 win at Connecticut on July 22. Per league rules, she must remain on the Injured List a minimum three games.
