Smith Moves Into Third On WNBA Scoring Chart

July 22, 2004 — Lynx guard Katie Smith moved into third place on the WNBA's all-time scoring chart after scoring 27 points (9-for-15 FG, 6-for-9 3FG, 3-for-4 FT) in Minnesota's 68-52 win at Connecticut on Thursday night. Smith entered the game with 3,253 career points and passed Charlotte's Andrea Stinton (3,269) with a three-pointer with 15:09 remaining in the second half. Smith has totaled 3,280 points in her six-year WNBA career (181 games).

Smith, a four-time WNBA All-Star and a member of the U.S. women's Olympic basketball team, is the all-time leading scorer in the history of women's professional basketball (ABL/WNBA) with 4,711 points. On June 11 at Los Angeles, Smith became the fastest WNBA player to reach the 3,000-point mark (167 games).

With tonight's victory, the Lynx set a franchise record with their sixth straight victory and improved to 13-9 on the season. The six consecutive wins tie the longest winning streak in the WNBA this season (Connecticut, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle). The Lynx visit the Washington Mystics on Friday at 6:00 p.m. CDT.
