An Outside Look

Steve Barnes, Duke Radio Network

Jasmine Thomas has been vital to Duke's success since the day she arrived on campus. The program was dealing with a coaching change with Joanne P. McCallie taking over for Gail Goestenkors, who had recruited Thomas and two other incoming freshmen. Jasmine handled a rough situation smoothly and has been a fixture in the starting lineup since her sophomore season. She was a shooting guard playing the point until this season, when she moved back to her original position. She is still Duke's coach on the floor, but has developed other parts of her game without the running the offense all the time. She has Lindsey Harding-like explosion to the rim and Alana Beard-like ball hawking and leadership skills. Thomas can beat an opponent in many ways, and has a knack of hitting big shots and making big plays at the end of games. She will finish her career in Duke's top 10 in scoring, three-pointers made, assists and steals. She is deadly inside the paint with layups from either hand and an unstoppable floater. Her jump shot has improved during her career and will get better still in the pros.

Leadership and character are also as big a part of Jasmine Thomas as her considerable on-court skills. She shows the five freshmen how to play Duke basketball every day in practice and how to act off the floor. She's unafraid to speak up on the court and leads her team in multiple community service projects. She is a tireless autograph signer after every home game and has groups of young girls waiting for her after every game. She is also a two-time Academic All-American.

I have been around a lot of great players and people over my 14 seasons, but Jasmine Thomas and Alana Beard are the top ambassadors of Duke women's basketball. There are no better role models than those two and the WNBA team that gets Jasmine will realize quickly that they've chosen a winner, on and off the floor.
