School Bio: Carolyn Swords
Boston College center Carolyn Swords is the tallest of the top draft prospects, standing at 6-6. Swords has made a name for herself with her touch around the basket. The three-time NCAA leader in field goal percentage has made a remarkable 67.7 percent of her shots over her career and has upped that percentage to 72.2 percent (218-of-302) her senior season. It remains to be seen how she’ll do defensively at the next level, but Swords will get plenty of looks because of her ability to score inside.
A 6-6 center with skill who leads the nation in FG% and led the ACC in rebounding in 2009-10.
Boston College Radio Play-by-Play
Carolyn Swords is putting up some ridiculous numbers on the offensive end, including shooting an astounding 70+ percent from the floor. What makes her so effective inside?
She is more effective than most post players as she usually catches the ball in a position where she can score, she keeps the ball up high and is great with both left and right hands.
For those who haven't seen her play, describe her offensive game. Is she a back-to-the-basket type player? Can she hit the 10-foot jumper?
Much more of a true post with great feel with her back to the basket. Can hit a 15-foot jumper, but not the 3.
How have you seen Swords’ game develop over her four years at Boston College?
She has gotten better with both hands and has become a true leader both on and off the floor. She is very unselfish and can pass it well, too. That has developed a lot.
What would you consider to be her strengths on the court?
Basketball IQ, awareness, ability to feel the double- or triple-team, automatic on the inside, selfless, keeping the ball up high on the rebound and when getting a pass.
How is she on the defensive end of the court?
Good, but could always get better (especially for WNBA). Good with blocks and not committing fouls, just needs to get stronger.
How do you think she fits in at the next level?
I truly believe that if she works on her physical strength and makes a commitment to that, she could be a great pro. She can get up and down the floor and is in good shape, but she can get pushed around by stronger posts. She would be a dream as far as personality and leadership on any team! An amazing person!
