Augustus named Western Conference Player of the Week
The WNBA today named Minnesota Lynx forward Seimone Augustus its Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Saturday, June 6 through Sunday, June 14. The award is the third such honor in Augustus' four-year WNBA career.
The first overall pick of the 2006 WNBA Draft, Augustus previously earned the award on June 5, 2006 and June 2, 2008. Augustus is one of only two players in Lynx history to receive Player of the Week honors, joining Katie Smith who won the award on June 16, 2000 and June 3, 2001.
"It is definitely a great honor to be named the WNBA Player of the Week," Augustus said. "I just want to thank my teammates for all their hard work because basketball is a team sport, and without them I wouldn't have received this award."
In four games last week (3-1), Augustus averaged 21.8 points while shooting 33-for-61 (.541 FG%) from the field, 6-for-10 (.600 FG%) from three-point range and 15-for-17 (.882 FT%) from the free-throw line. Augustus tallied her 11th career 30+-point game when she poured in 30 points on 12-for-22 shooting, including a career-best-tying 4-for-5 from beyond the arc in an 87-76 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 10. Augustus also hauled in nine rebounds, also tying her career high. Augustus ranks third in the WNBA in scoring (21.8 ppg), second in field goals made (33 FGM), sixth in steals (2.25 spg) and seventh in three-point percentage (.600 FG%).
In Minnesota's opening night victory over Chicago, playing in her 100th career WNBA game, Augustus scored a team-high 23 points (including 10-for-10 from the FT line) as the Lynx topped 100 for the second time in franchise history. One night later, Augustus contributed to Minnesota's franchise-best 63.2% shooting from the floor by hitting nine of her 11 shots en route to scoring 19 points in a 96-74 Lynx win over Indiana.
Through Minnesota's first four games, Augustus and the Lynx have broke six franchise records and tied another. Minnesota's 35-point second quarter in the season opener vs. Chicago set a new franchise mark for points scored in a second quarter. One night later in Indiana, the Lynx set franchise records for most points scored in a first quarter (34), first half (60), highest field goal percentage in a quarter (13-for-14, .929 FG%, first quarter), game (36-for-57, .632 FG%), and tied the franchise record for most field goals made in a half (23). On Wednesday, June 10 the Lynx continued their assault on the record books, shooting 33-for-66 (.500 FG%) from the floor in a 87-76 defeat of the Sparks, marking the fourth-straight game that Minnesota had shot at or above 50 percent dating back to the 2008 season, another Lynx record.
Behind Augustus, the Lynx currently lead the league in shooting (.522 FG%) and are the only team in the WNBA shooting above 50 percent from the field. The Lynx also rank second in scoring (89.0 ppg) and second in three-point shooting (.463 FG%).
Chicago's Candice Dupree was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
Other candidates for the WNBA's Western Conference Player of the Week were Los Angeles' Betty Lennox, Phoenix's Diana Taurasi, Sacramento's Kara Lawson, San Antonio's Sophia Young and Seattle's Lauren Jackson.
