Lynx Coach Suzie McConnell Serio
"We still have an opportunity to earn a playoff spot, but we aren't helping ourselves any. This was a huge game at home, especially starting out the way we did. We came out with a lot of confidence. We let them take the lead before the end of the half, and it went downhill from there. This is two games in a row where we have fizzled in the second half. We have made great efforts to get back in the game, but we just ran out of time."
"We need to play with a sense of urgency. We have been playing teams with two or three straight losses, and they have come in with more urgency. They have found ways to beat us. We need to be the aggressor. We need to want it more than them... This is the time of year when everyone raises their level of play. They all want to be in the playoffs. I'm disappointed we didn't keep our intensity after our start tonight."
"Look at tonight — we had 62 field-goal attempts to their 46... That's unbelievable. They were much more efficient. We missed too many layups and opportunities."
"Helen does a great job defensively, putting pressure on the ball. When she picked up her fourth foul, I didn't get AJ to the table quick enough. She has played with fouls well before, but her fifth... I didn't think it was a good call. But we have confidence in AJ. She's a three-point shooter. She's a threat offensively that teams need to be aware of. There's always a question to go back to (Darling), but I have confidence in AJ to get the job done."
"Transition killed us. We did a very poor job defensively getting back. There has been an emphasis in practice on this and entering every game. Out of our press and aggressive defense, obviously they got a few layups out of that. But they were getting layups off of rebounds. We can't have that. It's our guards' responsibility to get back."
Lynx Forward Tamika Williams
"There comes a point when you've got to get it done. Everybody is hungry for the playoffs right now, and everybody wants a spot. And the Eastern Conference... Charlotte wins two games and they're in first place. We need to have somebody step up like a Katie Smith, but she is no longer with us. We are rebounding, getting free throws and more shots... You look at the stat sheet and you would think we'd be winning these games. But it's the little things that are going to make a difference."
"These are two games where the teams are down. If you get them frustrated and get them down in the first half, they might go back into the shell because they're losing so much. So now we are flip-flopping with the Indianas and Charlottes, who've been on losing streaks and are now winning. We have to find the energy and ride a high."
Lynx Forward Svetlana Abrosimova
"We can't worry (about the standings). We have to think about ourselves — everybody is so close right now. I think everybody is upset because we didn't take care of business in the first couple of minutes of the second half. We tried to come back, but this time of year you have to play 40 minutes."
"We still have a lot of games left. We are confident because we've done a good job before, but we're in a position where we have to fight. We have to do it right here in this locker room. Everybody has counted us out. They said without Katie, we can't do it. But Katie gave us everything to be here in this position, so we just have to take care of it."
"I still feel confident. This is the time of year where you have to play every minute like it's your last minute. In the first half we played well — we played good aggressive defense — and in the second half, I don't know what happened. They took us apart. We have to be more careful. When we won against Houston, we felt good that we were going to take care of business and everything was working fine. It's a good reality check. We have to fight through everything."
Sting Coach Trudi Lacey
"This win tonight was huge for us, because every game at this point of the season is important. I felt our team has been playing well lately. We just haven't been able to close out games. That was the difference tonight. We were able to hold on because we attacked their pressure and made our free throws. This was a big win for our playoff run."
"The reason Minnesota got off to such a good start is because we couldn't find our rhythm defensively. We were out of position and allowing them to get too many three-point plays. Once we settled down, I thought that our defense really forced them into some tough shots."
"Charlotte (Smith-Taylor) has been playing very well for us lately. It just hasn't always been showing up on the stat sheet. Tonight she shot extremely well, and besides missing those free throws late in the game, I thought she was a big reason we won this game."
"Allison Feaster really stepped up her all-around game in the second half. She keyed our run that opened the half with her defense, and got herself some easy baskets. She wasn't as 'on' as she has been from outside, but she made up for it with her intensity on defense."
"We wanted Staley to have the ball in her hands at the end of the game. Minnesota did a good job of denying her the ball. But when we were finally able to get her open, she knocked down the two biggest free throws of the game and won it for us. I wouldn't take anyone else over her at the end."
Sting Forward Allison Feaster
"The second half was the reason we won this game. The last few games we've lost, we have struggled to score even 18 points in the second half. Tonight I guess you could say we had an offensive explosion. The defensive end is where it all materialized, because we were able to come up with a lot of steals and capitalize on their mistakes."
"Our offense was really in rhythm tonight, and we were able to knock down the tough shots down the stretch — something we haven't been doing lately. Every little mini-run they came at us with, we hit the shot that silenced the crowd."
"This win is huge for us, for our playoff run. With our league as tight as it is, every win could decide the conference race. We're looking to really make a run now, late in the season — and a road win like this, against a playoff-caliber team, gives us a lot of confidence."
Sting Forward Charlotte Smith-Taylor
"I thought we had to weather a lot of storms tonight — at the beginning of the game, and then at the end. I think this team is really starting to come into its own, and that was why we were able to pull out this tough road victory."
"In past games, we haven't been able to carry momentum with us throughout the game. Tonight I thought, after we lost the momentum in the first half, we took it to start the second and never really gave it back. Our defense really keyed a lot of what we were able to do tonight."
"Obviously missing Katie Smith hurts Minnesota. So much of what they do on both offense and defense keys off of her. One thing I did see with the Lynx tonight was that their other players have really stepped up and done what they can to fill her void."
