The months of April and May were hard for Lynx forward Svetlana Abrosimova. The 24-year-old spent that time finishing her overseas playing commitment and was not able to attend training camp and the start of the season with her Lynx teammates. To make matters worse, Abrosimova was battling an injury that possibly could have ended her season.
Fast-forward to late August, and you find happy times with a healthy Abrosimova helping the Lynx become one of the top teams in the WNBA. "When I came back, this team started to get on a good roll because people started to find out how to play together," she said. "I was glad to be a part of it."
For the past two years, a sore back has bothered Abrosimova, but the pain graduated to a herniated disk during the offseason. She worked hard to improve her back by getting treatment from specialists in Minnesota. The hard work paid off; within three weeks, Abrosimova was back in the Lynx lineup and quickly provided an offensive spark with nine points in her first outing. "My back is feeling a lot better now, and I am in much better shape and feeling much more comfortable on the court," she said.
Abrosimova came off the bench in her first 11 appearances for the Lynx in 2004, then was inserted into the starting lineup to replace Katie Smith for the three games prior to the August break. As a starter, Abrosimova averaged 10.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, compared to 2.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest as a reserve. Abrosimova is expected to be a starter when the Lynx return to action Wednesday at Houston.
After having to deal with injuries and an extended season overseas, Abrosimova seems to have found a groove with the Lynx. Her statistics are not where they were last season, but her contributions are showing up in the win column, with the team on a nice run since her return. Abrosimova's hard work and determination to bounce back have strengthened her mentality and have given the Lynx a big boost on the court.
