New York’s Rising Star
Now in her second season starting for the Liberty, she took the time to chat with NYLiberty.com to discuss the evolution into a superstar, and the legacy she hopes to leave on the Liberty.
What did you do in the off-season to get to this level of basketball?
I played in Madrid, Spain for a team that actually did not have any Americans and it was the first year they had been in Division I. I had to help them compete and get to the Playoffs. We just barely missed it, thanks to my Liberty teammate, Ashley Battle, but it’s okay. I felt like I truly got better in the sense of leadership and being relaxed and having fun.
You were highlighted in USA TODAY just recently as one of the ‘Top Five Stars to Watch’ in the League this season. What does that mean to you?
That means a lot. You know a lot of people here know the potential of what I can do and I feel like I haven’t even started to reach my potential. So to actually be acknowledged in that category, especially with Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, it’s a great honor. At least I know that people are out there and know what I can do. I just need to go out there and do what I know I can.
You are on pace this season for surpassing two Liberty legends, Sophia Witherspoon & Teresa Weatherspoon on the Liberty all-time points list. How do you compare your game to these two team legends?
Wow! I am still trying to learn to this day, especially from Spoon about the energy that she brings to the game and her passion for it, it is just unbelievable. My whole thing is just to continue to talk to them and get as much through talking, because they are just phenomenal players and they have meant a lot to this organization.
What would you say to T-Spoon if you were to pass her record?
I wouldn’t know what to say, but I know records are meant to be set as well as broken. I’m not too sure I would say too much of anything because regardless if I pass the record or not, I still respect her as a player.
What do you want to contribute to the Liberty franchise in terms of your own legacy?
Anytime you are competing you want to create a legacy that you will be remembered by, whether it’s for defense or for scoring. It is definitely something I want to have, where people remember me as being a scorer, a great rebounder, or defender.
