An exciting season came to a dramatic close in Game Three of the Eastern Conference Finals for the Liberty, as they fell just one game short of shocking the basketball world by reaching the WNBA Finals in a 75-73 loss to the Detroit Shock. It marked the second straight season they were eliminated by Detroit in the third and definitive game of a playoff series.

Nonetheless, the 2008 campaign was a resounding success for New York. The youngest team in the league completed the year ranked third in the Eastern Conference, and won their first playoff series since 2004 by defeating the Connecticut Sun in the first round.

The Liberty established one of the league’s best inside-out combinations with Janel McCarville and Shameka Christon, who shredded opponents on a nightly basis. They also boasted one of the deepest benches in WNBA history, with any player capable of leading the team on any given night.

Finally, the future also looks bright for New York thanks to the valuable contributions they received from three rookies in Essence Carson, Erlana Larkins and Leilani Mitchell. All three played vital roles from day one and figure to only improve with one year under their belts.

The 2009 season figures to be even better for the Liberty, so be sure to get ahead of the game.
