My New Year’s Resolution
After switching coasts and teams, guard Lisa Willis joined the New York Liberty family from the Los Angeles Sparks on June 20 last summer. Often a rough transition for young players, the southern California native made the most of the move and her new surroundings in her sophmore WNBA season. She averaged 8.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and shot 50-percent from long range in her first five games for New York. Willis recently took time from her busy overseas schedule in Greece to chat up NYLiberty.com, dishing out her resolution for the New Year.
"My New Year’s resolution is to stop taking the life that I live for granted.
I feel like I am a blessed person in so many ways, and I don't ever want to take waking up in the morning for granted again. There are a lot of people who didn’t make it to the year 2008, rest in peace to all of you.
So, in my eyes it is a big deal that I am alive. I will not take my job for granted. Even though practice can get tough, the coach might be on my back, my teammates might not pass me the ball, or the fans don't like me as much as they like my teammates, I will not take my job for granted.
There are a lot of people who have high hopes and dreams in their lives. Then there are a smaller number of people, such as myself, who actually get to live out their dreams. There are some people who would just love to have any job that pays their bills. So, from my stand point, I am very blessed to, not only have a job, but to have my dream job.
I will not take my family for granted. There are so many families out there who have been mad at each other for months or years, and they just can't see eye to eye with one another. I must say that this was the best Christmas that I have ever had in my 23 years of life. All of my family was there, and we had a great time, laughing, singing, joking, and eating. And the love that the Willis family shares – it is definitely one-of-a-kind.
And last but not least, I will not take my friends for granted. Sometimes people go through hardships without someone to talk to. Sometimes people cry, but have no one to wipe their tears. And at times, we may stumble and fall, but not have anyone to help us get up. That's where a true friend comes in to play. A lonely person I will never be. With the love, honesty, support, commitment, and fun times that my friends and I share, even when we are apart, I will still be left with the memories we share.
So, starting with year 2008, I will appreciate the things people take for granted: food, water, clothes, health, money, job, friends and family. I will appreciate life itself!!!"
