The Fever (7-8) defeated the Liberty (6-10) in their last matchup on July 13th, 74-53, at the Prudential Center. Rookies Kelsey Bone and Toni Young moved into the starting line up for New York giving the team enhanced size and athleticism to start the game. Cappie Pondexter made her debut as starting lead guard for the Liberty. Bone scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the game. Young contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Veteran forward Plenette Pierson led the team with 12 points off the bench. Alex Montgomery attacked the glass throughout the game and finished with 11 rebounds. The Liberty outrebounded the Fever 39-32 but struggled with 22 turnovers while only forcing 9 total team turnovers out of Indiana.

Indiana benefitted from 41% shooing from the field and 40% shooting from three. The Fever played hard and fast and took control of the game with a 31-6 third quarter run. Indiana played unselfishly, whipping the ball around in the half court set or making the extra pass on a fast break. Five Indiana players scored in double digits with Erlana Larkins leading the way with 15 points and 6 rebounds in an inspired interior effort. Tamika Catchings scored 10 points, pulled 7 rebounds, dished 4 assists and swiped 3 steals in the game.

The Liberty enter Tuesday’s game after an 80-69 loss to the Sky in Chicago on July 20th. Despite the loss New York played with enthusiasm. Katie Smith led the defensive charge that held Elena Delle Donne to 2 for 8 shooting and only 7 points. Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points and added 4 assists, 4 rebounds, but also gave up 6 turnovers. Plenette Pierson scored 12 points as a starter in the game.

Keys To The Game:

Be Weary of Theft
The Fever defense is very active and boasts both perimeter and interior players who enjoy playing in passing lanes for steals and deflections. Liberty players should shorten their passes, get better angles and come to the ball each on each pass.

3rd Quarter Blues
New York is still working to improve their ability to put together four strong quarters and have stumbled during the third quarter. Halftime can sometimes disrupt the focus and flow of players during a game, still, New York needs to find a way to keep the fire after the mid-game break.
