Catching Up With J-Mac

After nearly seven months abroad in Russia, competing for CSKA Moscow, Janel McCarville is now back home in Wisconsin surrounded by miles of land, silence and spotty cell phone service. She wouldn't have it any other way.

The silence, however, will be short lived, as the veteran center will be making her way east to the Big Apple for the open of Training Camp on May 17.

As McCarville gears up for her third season in a Liberty uniform, briefly caught up with her on-line to find out about her off-season stint overseas and what she's looking forward to this summer; aside from surprising fans with another hair color.

NYL: Good to go now?
JM: Yup
NYL: Super.
JM: Bring it.
NYL: What did you learn from this past season in Russia?
JM: It was a good experience for me. I had a couple of different roles - coming off the bench, and also starting. It also gave me the opportunity to play alongside some of the best players in the world!!
NYL: So it was more mental than physical? Both?
JM: I would say it was both. We had a very tough year on and off the court for CSKA, with a change of coaches and ownership, it took its toll on the mind and body!
NYL: So in the lapse of time between then and Training Camp; what do you work on from home?
JM: I work on getting my mind right for another season ... it ain't as easy as I make it look
NYL: Of course not. What was the first thing you did when you got a moment to yourself after getting back?
JM: Went for a ride on my four-wheeler down to my river and listened to the silence. All the noises of the forest. It was great not seeing a building or concrete everytime I turned around!! Also just kicked it with the family!!
NYL: So you were in a city in Russia?
JM: Yeah, Moscow ...
NYL: Just sounds chilly ...
JM: Roughly 20 minutes from Red Square, and 15 minutes from TGI Fridays ...
NYL: Nice.
JM: It's about the same as my home climate from WI ;)
NYL: Well, hope it's warmed up some over there.
NYL: So what are you looking forward to this summer on the court?
JM: A big season to be honest. I know me and all the other girls that were in Russia have gotten stronger, and when we get together, with the additons we made in off-season, players and coaches, we will be ready to go!
NYL: Think having everyone in Camp from the get-go will be a good start for the team?
JM: Yes, I really do. It will give us an oppprtunity to grow from the start! Be on the court together, geting ready for a championship season.
NYL: Do we have to wait until Training Camp to find out what color your hair is or will you reveal now?
JM: Hahaha. I look good, that's all anyone needs to worry about!
NYL: Well put.
JM: Hahaha, just keeping it real. will have player updates throughout Training Camp, stay logged in for more!
