Rutgers’ Kia Vaughn & Duke’s Abby Waner Selected In 2009 WNBA Draft

New York, NY – April 9 – New York Liberty President and General Manager Carol Blazejowski announced today that the team selected center Kia Vaughn from Rutgers University with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft. The Liberty also selected guard Abby Waner of Duke University in the second round, as the 21st overall pick.

Vaughn, a Bronx, NY native, recently completed her collegiate career as a Scarlet Knight averaging 9.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. This season she became the school’s all-time leader in games played with 135 and led Rutgers to a Sweet 16 bid in the NCAA Tournament. Vaughn will graduate ranked second in all-time rebounds (1,079) and blocked shots (279).

While at Duke, Waner averaged 10.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for her career. She will graduate as the school’s all-time leader in three-point field goals for a career (222) and for a season (68).

“With the selections of Vaughn as our first pick and Waner in the second round, we are adding a combination of size and depth to our roster, which will help the Liberty’s pursuit of a WNBA championship,” said Blazejowski. “We look forward to welcoming them to training camp and starting the 2009 season.”

New York City will be able to catch the Liberty and its newest additions in action when the pre-season opens on Thursday, May 21 with a matinee matchup at 11:00 a.m. against the Washington Mystics at Madison Square Garden. The Liberty will officially tip-off the regular season at The Garden on Sunday, June 7 at 4:00 p.m. against the Connecticut Sun.
