Christon Welcomed Into 2,000-Point Club
"To be in the same category as them is great," said Christon, who played with all three players. "I respect them and I admire them so much even still till this day. I stay in contact with them all, so I'm happy and excited."
Christon scored a career-high 32 points, including the game-winner, on 8-of-14 shooting from the field as the Liberty defeated the Dream for the second time in a week. With the clock winding down and the score knotted at 84, She calmly drained a long 3-pointer from above the key to break her previous high of 28 points set last season, then sealed the win with two free throws with 4.9 seconds left.
The 32 points qualify as a season-high in the WNBA this summer, as Christon and Seattle Storm star Lauren Jackson have been the only players to reach that mark.
"I think she truly is a great player in this league," said teammate Janel McCarville, who assisted the go-ahead bucket. "She's really making a name for herself, and we definitely need her playing this type of basketball for us to be successful."
Christon, who began the 2009 season with 1,781 points, as of Sunday now has 2,009 for her career. In the midst of her best season so far, she ranks fifth in the league in scoring with a career-high 19.0 points per game through 12 games, while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and an incredible 50 percent from downtown.
The 32 points also lands Christon on the franchise's single game bests list for the second best scoring performance. Only two other players in club history have scored more points, Hammon and McCarville have previously scored 33 points in one game.
