Sunday with Spoon
It may have been cold outside, but the MSG Training Center was on fire with that familiar energy fans remember oh so well. The bundle of energy that is Liberty Legend Teresa Weatherspoon. Approximately 200 season subscribers spent their Sunday with the one-and-only number 11, as she fielded questions, signed autographs, took pictures, and most imporantly, gave them her full attention.
As a reward for renewing their subcriptions on time for 2007, season ticket holders were invited to this unique meet-and-greet with Spoon. She spoke to the group about a variety of issues, ranging from who her favorite opponent was (Kim Perrot) to how she got her start playing ball (at age 4, using her mother's laundry basket). She told stories of the abuse Becky Hammon sustained from the veterans on the court when she tried to walk on to the team in 1999. The moral to Spoon's story? No matter how many times her teammates knocked her down in the beginning, Becky just kept getting back up. Then Spoon knew the kid from South Dakota was a keeper.
Those in attendance even had the delight of watching Spoon re-enact "The Shot." From Kym Hampton's inbounds pass to Tina Thompson's open-mouthed awe. And finished with Spoon on the floor celebrating, and remarking that as Venus Lacy jumped on top of the pile, she couldn't breathe.
Fans were then able to get autographs from the legend. And Spoon signed everything - books, jerseys, hats, even a bobblehead version of herself. Many season subscribers walked away with photos of themselves with Spoon, which are sure to be framers.
A good time was certainly had by all on this Sunday in Tarrytown. Perhaps by Spoon most of all.
