Welcome to the Big Apple!

January 16, 2007 -- New York, NY Janel McCarville has always been a small town girl. The newest Liberty player was raised in Wisconsin, spent her college years in Minnesota, and played pro ball the past two years in North Carolina. Needless to say, New York City is a bit different than McCarville's previous residences. After being selected by the Liberty in the WNBA Dispersal Draft earlier this month, the 6'2" forward is looking forward to taking on the Big Apple.

When you first heard you had been selected by New York in the Dispersal Draft, what did you think?
I was so excited! Itís a chance to start a new chapter in both my life and my basketball career. Plus, I was excited to play my home games at The Garden!

What is life in Slovakia and playing overseas like?
I love it here in Slovakia: I love my teammates, coaches and the ownership. They make me feel right at home, and thatís a lovely feeling when you are this far from home!

What are you working on in Slovakia that you want to bring back to the WNBA?
Right now Iím working on ball-handling, penetration, and my outside shooting.

As a visiting player, what was your impression of New York?
I came from a small town in Wisconsin, and New York is certainly anything but small! But I enjoyed it. There is a lot to do, and the people seemed friendly.

What are you most looking forward to about coming to New York and playing for the Liberty?
Definitely playing in The Garden! Itís a historic and intimidating place for opponents to play.

After growing up in Wisconsin, going to college in Minnesota, and playing in Charlotte, how do you think you will adjust to life in the Big Apple?
Unless you grow up in NYC, I donít think you can prepare yourself to live there. I donít doubt my head will be spinning for a couple of weeks when I first get there. And then again it might be spinning for a while after that too!

What would you like to say to Liberty fans?
I would just like to say hi, I am so excited to come play for you, and I hope you're ready for a good season!

Just as Janel McCarville is excited about coming to New York, the Liberty feels the same way. ďWe are thrilled to have the opportunity to add someone with Janelís size and skills to the Liberty,Ē said Carol Blazejowski, Vice President and General Manager of the Liberty. ďJanel has demonstrated the ability to score in the low post and rebound and will provide us with another option up front. She is having a breakout year overseas and we look forward to adding her ability, youth and confidence to the team this summer.Ē
