On The Liberty Beat

You've seen the articles in the newspapers. And you've seen the reporters sitting courtside at games. But have you ever wondered what goes into covering the Liberty, and what it's like to have a behind the scenes look at the team? Well one lucky 13-year-old fan found out. Kyra Borenstein won the opportunity to be a "Beat Reporter for a Day" in an auction to benefit Madison Square Garden's Cheering for Children Foundation. Her experience as a reporter at the August 2 game against Connecticut included pre-game interviews with players in the locker room, a seat amongst her "peers" at Press Row and an article of her own writing here on nyliberty.com.

On The Liberty Beat

I never thought I would find myself sitting in the best row - Press Row - watching the New York Liberty vs. the Connecticut Sun. Even though the Sun won, 72-65 (and Iím a huge Liberty fan, so it was a tough loss), for me it was the best game ever. During the game, I had the best seat in the house, right under the basket and next to the Connecticut Sun bench. It was a wonderful experience. Since I was so close to the court, sometimes I could even hear what the players were yelling to each other on the floor!

Before the game I had the opportunity to interview Shameka Christon and DeTrina White. I also had the chance to talk to Crystal Robinson out on the court. When I interviewed Shameka and DeTrina, I asked them how they mentally and physically prepare for a game. Shameka said to mentally prepare she watches film of her opponents and to physically prepare she eats well. DeTrina said to prepare mentally for a game she gets plenty of rest and to prepare physically she does cardio workouts to stay in game shape.

Watching the game from Press Row was a great once in a lifetime experience and if I had the opportunity to do it again I would most definitely do it!

You can get this kind of "once in a lifetime experience" too - keep an eye out next season for Cheering for Children auctions at select Liberty games.
