2007 In Review: Ashley Battle

The summer came and went, but not without plenty of excitement from the 2007 Liberty. Through the up’s and down’s, it was a great season for the young squad to get some experience in the quicker, bigger, stronger WNBA.

As players begin to part ways en route to off-season endeavors, NYLiberty.com is handing in its season homework – a final report, which takes a look back at how each member of the team faired this summer. Today’s chapter of the report looks at guard Ashley Battle.

In 2007, Battle exploded off the bench – typically as the first or second player – posting double figures in nine games … Battle finished the regular season averaging a career-best 22.3 minutes, 7.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game … She appeared in all 34 games and was the Liberty’s leading reserve scorer this season.

Battle led the Liberty in scoring three times this season and once in rebounds … The month of June was when Battle produced her biggest numbers of the summer … She helped the Liberty achieve its fourth consecutive win to start the season, with a 15-point, seven-rebound performance over the Indiana Fever on June 5th … And her season high of 18 points, including a clutch pair of free throws in the final seconds, sealed a victory over the Sun at Connecticut on June 20th.

Battle was one of five Liberty players to finish the regular season ranked amongst the League’s Top 20 three-point field goal shooters … With an individual .312 beyond-the-arc percentage, she helped contribute to the team’s No. 1 ranking for long-range shooting this season.

Battle earned five starts this season, which stands as a career-high … She made the most of her time in the starting five, as she averaged 28.6 minutes, 7.2 points, 4.6 rebounds 1.2 steals and 1.6 assists in those games.

Battle hooked MSG Network viewers up with a behind-the-scenes look at the Liberty during its west coast road trip through Sacramento, Los Angeles and Seattle in late June … As the team’s source of comic relief, fans came along with her for trips through airport delays, the mall, movies and grabbing some In & Out Burger after practice. Head Coach Pat Coyle on Battle:
“AB gives us that extra boost we need. Her energy is contagious. Her teammates feed off her.”
