Ann Wauters to make WNBA Return versus Charlotte Sting

Charlotte, North Carolina (June 1, 2004) – The New York Liberty announce the arrival of the 2004 WNBA Dispersal Draft selection, Ann Wauters. Coming off her recent French Cup Championship, the former number one draft pick (2000), has traveled over 4,600 miles to Charlotte, North Carolina to report to the team in the midst of a four-game road trip.

“We are very excited to have Ann Wauters join our roster, her size and athleticism will certainly add to the overall success of our team,” said New York Liberty head coach Richie Adubato. “She is a very intelligent basketball player which will help acclimate her to our system quickly and get into the rotation that much quicker. I can’t wait for our fans to see what she can bring to the table.”

Wauters, a 6’-4” center was selected as the 4th player overall in the 2004 WNBA dispersal draft, played in the French league last season, averaging 16.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg during the 2003 season with US Valenciennes Olympic in France. She last played in the WNBA during the 2002 WNBA season with the Cleveland Rockers; she averaged 11.2 ppg and 5.0 rpg in 28.6 mpg. She ranked third among WNBA leaders in field-goal percentage (.553) and tied for eighth in free-throw percentage (.851).

“I missed playing in the league last summer and I am very excited to come back to the WNBA,” said Wauters. “I’m looking forward to my first game at Madison Square Garden in my New York Liberty uniform.”

The Liberty, who are in the midst of a week long four game road trip, are currently atop the Eastern Conference with a 3-1 record and are coming off their third consecutive victory. Elena Baranova and Shameka Christon both recorded season highs in points in the Liberty victory over the Minnesota Lynx. Up next is the Charlotte Sting on Tuesday, June 1st followed by Houston on the third and San Antonio on the fifth. The Liberty and Ann Wauters return to Madison Square Garden on Friday, June 11th to take on the Indiana Fever.
