Silver Stars-Lynx Preview

While playing against the Western Conference leaders is tough enough, possibly doing so without one of their top scorers makes the Minnesota Lynx's task on Friday even more difficult.

The Lynx (12-12) hope rookie Candice Wiggins will be available as they try for their 12th straight home win over the San Antonio Silver Stars in the final regular season meeting between the conference rivals.

The Silver Stars (17-9) have lost 11 straight on the road to the Lynx, including a 90-78 loss June 8. Their last win at the Target Center was a 79-75 overtime victory on May 25, 2002 when the franchise was based in Salt Lake City.

But San Antonio may not face Wiggins, who scored 24 points in Minnesota's 87-74 road win over the Silver Stars on Saturday. She could sit out Friday after injuring her back in the first quarter of Minnesota's 84-80 overtime win at Indiana on Thursday.

Wiggins, the third overall selection in April's WNBA draft, came into the game second among rookies with 17.1 points per game. She remained on the court for several minutes after the injury before being taken to the locker room in a wheelchair.

"I know Candice was very concerned," Lynx coach Don Zierden said. "That's why I stayed out there so long, to try to comfort her."

Charde Houston also left the game in a wheelchair after injuring her left knee. It's not known whether either will be able to play on Friday.

"Anytime you lose a teammate, especially players like Wiggins and Charde, it's going to be tough," said Lynx star Seimone Augustus, who scored 25 points Thursday. "I pray to God that it's not really serious and they'll be back."

Wiggins' injury is another setback for a Lynx team that has stumbled since it beat San Antonio on June 8 to remain in first place in the West.

The Silver Stars, meanwhile, have since moved into the conference lead and won for the ninth time in 11 games, 78-67 over the Chicago Sky on Thursday. Sophia Young scored 20 points and Erin Buescher added 13 off the bench for San Antonio.

Augustus has averaged 24.0 points in Minnesota's two wins over San Antonio this season. She sat out the Lynx's 73-65 loss at San Antonio on June 28 - the first game she missed as a pro.

"It was much easier without Augustus - let's just be factual," San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said after that game.
