UNCASVILLE, Conn., July 26 (AP) -- Evanthia Maltsi scored eight of her 12 points in the final two minutes to help the Connecticut Sun rally for a 79-75 win over the New York Liberty on Thursday.
Lindsay Whalen led the Sun (13-12) with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
Janel McCarville had 24 points and 10 rebounds for New York (10-13), which has lost five straight.
"We were fighting down to the last minute,'' Maltsi said. "We found what was working for us.''
Maltsi's 3-pointer with 1:55 left gave the Sun their first lead of the fourth quarter at 72-69. McCarville converted two straight layups to put New York in front but Maltsi hit another 3 with 36.3 seconds remaining to make it 75-73 Connecticut.
"We did a good job of keeping our poise in the fourth quarter when we were struggling,'' Sun coach Mike Thibault said. "Between our mess-ups and a couple of calls and everything else, that can get you frustrated, but we played through it.''
Maltsi had a key steal in the final seconds, and made two free throws to ice the game.
"You thought whoever had the ball last was going to win and it came down to executing,'' Liberty forward Ashley Battle said. "They did that very well and we just turned it over at the end.''
McCarville scored the opening basket of the second half to put the Liberty up 38-31. Connecticut responded with an 11-0 run. The Sun led by as many as six in the third quarter, but Loree Moore and Thorn made 3s for New York to help send it into the fourth tied at 53.
Reserve center Ericka DeSouza had 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots for the Sun.
