Catchings, Fever Slip Past Comets

Indiana 79, Houston 77

HOUSTON, July 10 (AP) -- Tamika Catchings scored 23 points to lead the Indiana Fever to a 79-77 victory over the Houston Comets on Tuesday night.

Indiana (14-4) held Houston to 10 fourth quarter points as the Comets made only 4-of-16 field goals in the final period. It was Indiana's first win in Houston.

The Fever tied the score at 73 on Catchings' layup with 4:26 left. She hit two free throws with 3:34 to go to give Indiana a two-point lead. Tammy Sutton-Brown extended the advantage to 77-73 with 2:01 left.

Michelle Snow hit a jumper to close Houston (5-14) within two with 1:46 left. After Snow missed a jumper that would have tied the game, Tully Bevilaqua hit a driving layup with 53 seconds left to give Indiana a 79-75 lead.

After a Houston timeout, Snow made a fade away jumper from the free-throw line with 30 seconds remaining. Tamecka Dixon blocked a jumper by Tan White and then missed a last second half-court attempt.

Sutton-Brown added 20 points, and Tamika Whitmore netted 13 points for the Fever.

Latasha Byears led Houston with 15 points. Tina Thompson added 13 and Hamchetou Maiga-Ba and Dixon each added 12 points.
