Smith’s 3-Pointer Lifts Sting Past Silver Stars
SAN ANTONIO, August 1 (Ticker) -- All-Star Tangela Smith saved her best for last.
Smith drained the game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds remaining to help lift the Charlotte Sting to a 68-65 triumph over the San Antonio Silver Stars.
A 6-4 forward, Smith was named to her first All-Star Game this season. On Tuesday, she made 5-of-15 shots and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Tammy Sutton-Brown scored on a layup and Sheri Sam hit a jumper with 1:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Charlotte a 65-61 advantage. However, Shannon Johnson hit a short jumper and Vickie Johnson sank both of her free throws with 16 seconds left, tying the game.
Rookie Monique Currie was double-teamed but found Smith, who missed her first three 3-pointers but sank one over rookie sensation Sophia Young from the left corner. Shanna Zolman misfired on San Antonio's last possession.
Currie scored 18 points and Sam and Helen Darling each added nine for the Sting, who shot 38 percent (24-of-63) from the field.
Shannon Johnson scored 16 points and Katie Feenstra added 13 and a career-high 18 rebounds for San Antonio, which shot 37 percent (25-of-67).
The Silver Stars (12-16) are 2 1/2 games behind Seattle (15-14) for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
