Smith’s Late Spurt Helps Sting Turn Back Lynx
MINNEAPOLIS, July 27 (Ticker) -- Tangela Smith helped the Charlotte Sting return the favor.
Smith scored eight of her 21 points in the final four minutes as the Sting used a late surge for an 81-68 victory over the Minnesota Lynx.
Sheri Sam scored 11 of her 17 points in the third quarter for Charlotte (8-18), which lost at home to Minnesota (9-16) on Tuesday but bounced back for its fifth win in seven games.
The Sting trailed, 39-36, at halftime before Sam nearly matched the Lynx in the third period. She had 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field while Minnesota had 13 on 5-of-11 shooting.
Trailing, 58-52, entering the final quarter, the Lynx pulled into a 64-64 tie on a driving layup by star rookie Seimone Augustus with 4:10 to play. But Smith made a jumper and 3-pointer to trigger a closing 17-4 spurt.
Kelly Mazzante scored 10 points off the bench for Charlotte, whcih avoided the season sweep. The Sting shot under 37 percent (30-of-82) but held a 38-31 advantage in rebounds.
Augustus scored 19 points and Vanessa Hayden added 17 and nine boards for Minnesota, which has not won two in a row since June 9-11. The Lynx shot 45 percent (26-of-58) but committed 23 turnovers.
