Comets Limit Augustus, Roll Past Visiting Lynx
HOUSTON, July 20 (Ticker) -- Once the Houston Comets stopped Seimone Augustus from scoring, it was easy to stop the rest of her Minnesota Lynx teammates.
The Comets limited Augustus to one basket over the final three quarters as they rolled to a 78-55 victory over the Lynx in a matchup of struggling teams.
The top overall pick in the WNBA draft, Augustus is leading the WNBA in scoring at 23 points per game. She got off to a quick start Thursday, collecting 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the first quarter as Minnesota grabbed a 22-18 lead.
However, Swoopes and Roneeka Hodges combined to limit Augustus to 1-of-10 from the field over the final three periods. The Lynx scored just 33 points in the last 30 minutes, including nine in the fourth quarter.
Two free throws by Chandi Jones gave Minnesota a 26-21 lead with 8:20 remaining in the second period before Swoopes scored seven points in a 17-2 surge.
A 3-pointer by Dawn Staley capped it at 38-28 with 3:48 left, and the Lynx got no closer than six points thereafter.
Hodges and Michelle Snow scored 13 points apiece for the Comets, who shot 50 percent (29-of-58) and held a 36-25 advantage in rebounds.
Augustus scored 15 points and Svetlana Abrosimova added 12 off the bench for the Lynx, who shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) and fell to 1-9 on the road.
