Snow Perfect, Comets Win Ninth Straight at Home
HOUSTON, July 2 (Ticker) -- Michelle Snow and the rest of the Houston Comets again buried the Sacramento Monarchs.
Snow scored 14 points on perfect shooting as the Comets continued their dominance of the Monarchs with an easy 77-62 victory.
Snow set the tone from the outset, making all five of her shots and scoring 10 points in the first quarter as the Comets raced to an 18-8 lead. The veteran forward finished 7-of-7 from the floor.
In the opening period, the Monarchs made just 4-of-17 shots and committed five of their 17 turnovers.
After the Monarchs pulled within 21-15 early in the second quarter, Swoopes scored seven points in a 14-6 surge to help the Comets rebuild the lead to double digits. Houston held a 40-27 lead at halftime and extended it to 65-41 after three quarters.
Dawn Staley collected 11 points and nine assists for the Comets, who never trailed and led by as many as 28 points. Houston shot 52 percent (26-of-50) to overcome a 37-26 deficit on the boards.
Yolanda Griffith had 14 points and 13 rebounds and a big scare for Sacramento, which shot just 34 percent (22-of-65).
With the Monarchs trailing, 72-56, with just over two minutes remaining, Griffith still was on the floor and had her right leg rolled by Anastasia Kostaki. The former WNBA MVP stayed down for a moment before limping to the bench.
