Pondexter’s Late 3-pointer Lifts Mercury Past Lynx
PHOENIX, June 28 (Ticker) -- Cappie Pondexter upstaged Seimone Augustus.
In a matchup of the WNBA's top two draft picks, Pondexter drilled a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds remaining to lift the Phoenix Mercury to a dramatic 81-78 victory over the Augustus and the Minnesota Lynx.
Selected with the second pick behind Augustus, Pondexter's fourth 3-pointer of the game snapped a 78-78 tie. She then sealed the victory by stealing the inbound pass.
Pondexter scored 19 points, making 5-of-14 shots overall.
Nicole Ohlde had made a layup with 9.2 seconds left to cap a 6-1 surge and bring the Lynx even at 78-78.
Augustus, who scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Lynx to a 95-82 victory over Pondexter and the Mercury in their first matchup on June 18, carried the offense for her club in this one. She scored 24 points but made just 9-of-22 shots and missed all seven of her attempts from behind the arc.
Phoenix (6-7) shot 42 percent (29-of-69) and moved within a game of reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Vanessa Hayden scored 18 points for the Lynx, who have lost three games and five of six overall.
