Whitmore, Fever Use Late Rally to Beat Sting
INDIANAPOLIS, June 18 (Ticker) -- Tamika Whitmore and the Indiana Fever exacted a measure of revenge against the Charlotte Sting.
Whitmore scored 11 of her career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter as the Fever erased a late 10-point deficit en route to a 92-85 overtime triumph over the Sting.
The Fever fell behind, 68-58, with 6:20 remaining Sunday and appeared headed to another disappointing loss to the Sting.
But Whitmore spearheaded an 18-6 run over the next four minutes, and Indiana owned an 80-78 lead late in regulation before Charlotte's Tangela Smith converted a layup with 22 seconds remaining to forge a tie and force overtime.
However, Whitmore and Tamika Catchings combined for six of Indiana's 12 points in the overtime while Charlotte shot just 2-of-11 in the extra session.
Catchings had 27 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high six assists while Anna DeForge chipped in 12 points and six assists for the Fever, who improved to 5-0 at home.
Smith scored 18 points and hauled in eight rebounds while Sheri Sam added 14 points for the Sting, who have lost three straight and five of six.
