Shock Run Past Liberty, Even Series
NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (Ticker) -- The defending champions are alive and well.
Cheryl Ford had 21 points and nine rebounds as the defending WNBA champion Detroit Shock evened their three-game series with a 76-66 Game Two victory over the New York Liberty.
Ford, the daughter of NBA star forward Karl Malone, gave the Shock the lead for good at 34-33 with a basket 1:08 into the second half that triggered a 25-7 run. Ruth Riley capped the run with two free throws that made it 57-40 with 10:24 left.
Deanna Nolan, who scored 20 points in a 75-62 loss in Friday's opener, added 18 points and Barbara Farris scored 11 and grabbed nine boards for Detroit.
Riley scored 13 points for the Shock, who shot 49 percent (24-of-49) from the field and shot 33 free throws to just eight for the Liberty.
La'Keshia Frett scored 20 points for New York, which made 10-of-29 3-pointers. Detroit attempted just three shots from the arc.
