Smith's Buzzer-Beater Stuns Storm
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug.2 (Ticker) -- Katie Smith's baseline jumper at the buzzer lifted the Minnesota Lynx to a 73-71 victory over the Seattle Storm in a key Western Conference clash.
Janell Burse made 1-of-2 foul shots with nine seconds left for Minnesota for a 71-69 advantage. Seattle went to All-Star guard Sue Bird, who tied the game with a driving driving layup with 2.6 seconds to go.
That set up one final chance for Minnesota and 39-year-old rookie Teresa Edwards fed Smith for the game-winner.
Burse collected 20 points and 12 rebounds and Smith added 15 points for Minnesota, which has won seven out of 10 games. Edwards handed out eight assists.
Bird scored 17 points and Lauren Jackson added 16 and 12 rebounds for Seattle, which lost its fourth straight road game. The Storm shot 34 percent (24-of-70) and were outscored in the paint, 42-30.
