Griffith's Big Game Stops Sparks
LOS ANGELES, June 28 (Ticker) -- Yolanda Griffith collected 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Sacramento Monarchs dealt the Los Angeles Sparks their third loss in 15 games, 69-60.
Griffith made a layup during a 6-0 burst that gave Sacramento a 43-37 lead with 12 1/2 minutes remaining.
There was some commotion with 16 seconds left when Griffith and Los Angeles forward Delisha Milton nearly came to blows. Milton was ejected and Kara Lawson made the ensuing free throw to give the Monarchs a 67-60 lead.
Lawson hit another pair from the line with seven seconds left for the final margin.
Los Angeles, which shot 41 percent (22-of-54) from the field, did not score for the final 63 seconds after a running jumper by Milton. Tamecka Dixon, who played all 40 minutes, led the Sparks with 20 points.
The Monarchs won despite shooting 39 percent (23-of-58) from the field. Edna Campbell had 13 points and Lawson 10 for Sacramento.
Jennifer Gillom was the Sparks' only reserve to score, netting two points. Los Angeles played without guard-forward Mwadi Mabika, who is battling a back injury.
