Campbell Makes Triumphant Return for Monarchs
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 13 (Ticker) -- Edna Campbell's emotional return turned out to be a triumphant one for the Sacramento Monarchs.
Campbell started every game a year ago for Sacramento but revealed her illness in March and has been undergoing treatment. Campbell received thousands of e-mails and notes when she made her announcement.
Yolanda Griffith's basket gave Sacramento its largest lead at 45-26 before Seattle staged a huge rally. Lauren Jackson's three-point play pulled the Storm within 51-48 with 8:14 left to play.
The Monarchs responded with an 8-2 spurt, capped by four points by Lady Grooms.
Griffith led Sacramento with 19 points and Tangela Smith added 17. Campbell scored four points and was presented with the league's Community Assist Award before the game for her off-the-court work.
Seattle received 18 points from Simone Edwards and 12 from Kamila Vodichkova. The Storm will make their first playoff appearance when they host top-seeded Los Angeles in the opener of a first-round series.
