In their first preseason game of 2014, a depleted Indiana Fever roster fell to the Washington Mystics on Tuesday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 80-63.
Indiana got off to a fast start, taking a 25-20 lead after the first quarter, but the offense stalled from there, combining to score just 17 points in the next two periods.
Rookie Natasha Howard led the Fever with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Free agent acquisition Marissa Coleman added 10 points and six rebounds, while trade acquisition Lynetta Kizer added nine points and four boards.
Only three Fever players from last year's roster dressed for Monday's game: point guard Briann January, guard Karima Christmas, and forward Jasmine Hassell. All-Star guard Shavonte Zellous and forward Erlana Larkins have not yet joined the team due to overseas commitments. Forward Tamika Catchings and guard Layshia Clarendon did not dress for precautionary reasons (Catchings will not play this preseason but is expected to start in the regular season opener on May 16), while guard Jeanette Pohlen was lost for the season after tearing her left achilles tendon in practice on Saturday.
