• The Fever reclaimed the Eastern Conference’s top spot after beating Phoenix on Sunday. Indiana and second-place Atlanta both play Western Conference teams on Tuesday. The Fever can clinch a playoff spot with any combination of three Indiana wins or Connecticut losses.

• Indiana’s Tamika Catchings won her 14th WNBA Player of the Week award for the week of August 1. She has the third-most weekly awards ever behind Lisa Leslie (15) and Lauren Jackson (19).

• The Eastern Conference continues to stay tight. In the past week, the top four teams have all switched places. New York worked its way into the third playoff position ahead of Washington, and is on a hot 8-2 streak. The Liberty beat both Indiana and Washington last week to move up in the standings.

Players to Watch
Fever – Tamika Catchings
As playoff time grows closer, teams look for veterans to lead them. Catchings has taken over in the last month. She was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for July, and Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the week of August 1. The veteran forward averaged 24.3 points per game in the last three contests, including a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double Sunday at Phoenix.

Mercury – Tina Thompson
Thompson reached a career milestone in her last outing against San Antonio. She became the all-time leading scorer in WNBA history. Thompson pushed former teammate Lisa Leslie to number two on the list. Along with breaking records, Thompson has been leading the Sparks in a fight for a Western Conference playoff spot. She averages just under 18 points per game in her last three outings. The Sparks have won four of their last six games, and currently sit a half-game out of fourth place in the West standings.
